The International Eucharistic Congress began in Lille, France, in 1881, inspired by Emilie Tamisier and St Peter Julian Eymard under the theme, “The Eucharist saves the world.” What began
as a small movement soon became a worldwide celebration of Catholic faith and unity. Australia has played a special role in this history. Sydney hosted the Congress in 1928, attracting
over 500,000 people, while Melbourne welcomed the world again in 1973 with speakers including Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II, and Mother Teresa. In 2028, Sydney will once again welcome pilgrims — and Pope Leo — from across the globe.
